We've updated our Oxford Dict software and renamed it PlecoDict (reflecting the fact that it now comes with several dictionaries besides Oxford's); for more information on PlecoDict, click here.
For historical purposes, here's the original description of Oxford Dict 2.0 from our website (circa 2003):
Our flagship product, widely considered to be one of the best portable electronic Chinese references available. Here are just a few of its great features:
- The essential Chinese reference: contains the complete text of the Oxford Concise English & Chinese Dictionary, 2nd edition, licensed from Oxford University Press.
- Handwriting input: We use WisdomPen technology (licensed from Motorola) so that you can look up characters by simply writing them on the screen.
- Radical input: for those of you who prefer to employ radical lookups, we've also converted the complete radical table from the print version of the dictionary for speedy access on your Palm OS handheld.
- Powerful Pinyin search: if you know how to pronounce it but not how to write it, just enter the Pinyin romanization of a word, with or without tones, for a list of every possible match.
- Built-in Chinese display system: so you don't need to buy a separate Chinese OS.
- Supports traditional and simplified characters for both handwriting and font display; if you've got enough memory you can even install both (and instantly switch between them).
- Cross-referencing: Can't tell which of the 9 definitions for 'time'
refers to? No matter - highlight it and click a button to instantly pull up its definition in the complementary dictionary.
And new in version 2.0:
- Flashcards: study on the go with our built-in flashcard system. Save time by creating flashcards from existing dictionary entries.
- Palm OS 5 support: one of the first Palm OS Chinese dictionaries to include support for OS 5.
- High resolution: now supports high-resolution font display on compatible Sony, Palm, and HandEra devices.
- Character zoom: on a low-resolution device, tap on a character on the screen to instantly bring up a zoomed-in version of it, allowing you to see details that might not be visible with a normal font.
- Custom dictionaries: create your own add-on dictionary databases, and search them all simultaneously.
- Instant Access: highlight a piece of text almost anywhere on your Palm and pop up the dictionary with a definition.
System Requirements:
- Any handheld running Palm OS version 3.0 or later with sufficient free RAM should be able to run the dictionary. You can see how much RAM you'll need for various configurations here, but as a general rule you'll want a handheld with at least 4-8 MB built-in; you may be able to install a very basic version on some 2 MB models, but that's not guaranteed. If you have any questions about hardware requirements please contact us and we'll be happy to help you.
