Pleco for Android

Transferring to Android from Another Platform

We're delighted to offer our customers the opportunity to transfer (most of) their previous Pleco purchases to the Android version of Pleco free-of-charge.

Please note that due to circumstances beyond our control, copies of Pleco transferred from Palm and Windows Mobile can only be used on one device at a time. So if you want to use your old Pleco purchase on both an Android phone and an Android tablet, for example, you'd need to purchase a second copy of Pleco for that, though that new copy (purchased originally on Android) would then be usable on up to three devices per our standard policy for new purchases. Also please note that the Stroke Order Diagrams add-on cannot be transferred over from Palm/WM; we licensed the data for it from a different source on Android (requiring us to pay new per-copy royalties).

For transfers from iOS, however, all of your purchases should be usable on Android, and you can use them on up to three devices at a time along with continuing to use them on iOS.

Transferring from Palm OS or Windows Mobile

  1. Log on to the My Orders page on our website, log in, and click on the button under "Change to Android Version" for the Palm / WM license you want to switch over to iPhone.
  2. Read through / fill out the form on the bottom of the page, and click "Submit" to switch your license over. Write down the "Registration ID" listed on the confirmation page.
  3. Open up Pleco on your Android device, press your device's menu button, and tap "Settings."
  4. Tap on "Enter Registration ID," and enter the ID from step 2.

Transferring from iOS

  1. Choose an iOS device on which all of your iOS purchases are activated (doesn't matter which one), go into the Pleco "Settings" tab on it, and write down the "Registration ID" at the top of the screen.
  2. Go to the My Orders page on our website to register your copy of Pleco.
    1. If you do not yet have a Pleco My Orders account, enter your Registration ID and email address in the form on the middle of the page to register it. Check your email for your login password. (if it doesn't arrive quickly, check your junk mail box to make sure it wasn't filtered out)
    2. If you already have an account on My Orders (from a previous Pleco purchase, e.g.), log into that account, then enter the Registration ID in the appropriate box on the left side of the screen.
  3. Look for your iOS copy of Pleco in the listing of previous purchases - it should be near the top of the page.
  4. Under "Activate Android Version," check to see if there are any items listed as "Unverified." If there are, turn on your iOS device from step 1, go into the Pleco "Add-ons" tab on it, and tap on the "Restore iTunes Purchases" button at the bottom of the screen - that should verify them. After that, reload the page.
  5. Click on the button under "Activate Android Version" to bring up a page with more details on activating your copy of Pleco on Android.
  6. Read through / fill out the form on the bottom of the page, and click "Submit" to switch your license over. Write down the "Registration ID" listed on the confirmation page.
  7. Open up Pleco on your Android device, press your device's menu button, and tap "Settings."
  8. Tap on "Enter Registration ID," and enter the ID from step 6.

Transferring your Flashcard Databases

All of these steps should be followed after you've successfully installed and activated your Pleco license on your new device.

  1. Back up your flashcard database from your device to your computer; instructions for that are here for iOS (under "Backup Database"), here for Windows Mobile ("Back up your flashcards to a Windows Computer"), or here for Palm OS (use PlecoMover to back up your database to an SD card, then copy it off of it via an SD card reader).
  2. Connect your Android device to your computer via a USB cable.
  3. Swipe down your device's notification area, tap on the USB connection notification, and tap on the button to mount your device as a USB drive on your computer.
  4. Open up the "Android" folder on your device's drive, the "data" folder inside of it, the "com.pleco.chinesesystem" folder inside of that, the "files" folder inside of that and the "databases" folder inside of that. If you don't see one of these folders, go back to the root directory of your device's drive and look for an "external" or "external_sd" or "emmc" folder; if you find one, open it and see if "Android" is inside of it instead. (if it is, go into Android / data / com.pleco.chinesesystem / etc as above)
  5. If you see a file in that "databases" folder called "Pleco Flashcard Database.pqb", delete it.
  6. Copy your backed-up flashcard database into the "databases" folder.
  7. Use your computer's "eject" command to unmount your Android device from it, then tap on the onscreen button on your device to disconnect it.
